Chromophobia - Christopher Stead

Chromophobia by Christopher Stead explores the polarities of high and low culture in England today. Informed by increasing social inequality, this work probes and pokes fun at cultural hegemony by stealing aesthetics and materials quarantined as low.

The long-term association of bright colour with popular culture and the decorative is exploited through material transgression. The emblematic motif of fluorescent, posits this colour as a symbol of the working class. The fetishized use of utilitarian materials and subversive vernacular dissolves the hierarchies of the commodity object, placing aesthetic value over material value.
